Reading Week Inspires Our Preschoolers to Become Readers For Life

Reading Week Inspires Our Preschoolers to Become Readers For Life

Students in KidWorks’ state-licensed preschool had an important decision to make earlier this month.  Would they rather spend time chatting with the Cat in the Hat, or meet with police officers, fire fighters, bankers, actors and others in professions they might one day like to enter?

The good news is that they didn’t have to pick at all.  They enjoyed all of these choices and more during a national reading week event that celebrated the wonderful books written by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel).

“Each year, the KidWorks preschool team puts together a special program to celebrate National Reading Month,” says teacher Minda Barrera-Vargas.  “While we concentrate on reading throughout the year, that week we focus on Dr. Seuss.  He is special because of the uniqueness and creativity of his beloved books.”

KidWorks Launches College Success Initiative

At KidWorks, 100% of our  high school seniors graduate on  time and 100% go on to college or university. And until now, we thought of them as our alumni. With the launch of our new KidWorks College Success Initiative™  we now serve students from Pre-K to B.A., making an 18 year commitment to each student at KidWorks.

The students we serve live near or below the poverty line.  Often their families are caught in a poverty cycle and are just surviving.  The best way to break the cycle is preventing it in the next generation. Currently 89%  of low-income students leave college without a degree and 25% leave after their first year.   Our KidWorks College Success Initiative™ is aimed at ending the poverty cycle by providing our students the tools they need to graduate from college and begin careers that break the cycle.  At KidWorks, we know eventually the cycle of poverty breaks.  One family at a time.

Philanthropist, business leader, educator and long-time supporter of KidWorks, David A. Pyle, has provided us with a one million dollar matching grant opportunity.  This grant provides KidWorks with the funding needed to implement our new KidWorks College Success Initiative™.  Donate to the KidWorks College Success Initiative™  and double your impact.  You will be helping us improve our community by ending the poverty cycle. Every dollar you give becomes two and every dollar you give changes a life!

Celebrating our ‘star’ students: Liliana Ledezma has a heart for music—and justice

This April, our KidWorks blog series will highlight two extraordinary students.  All of our students are “stars” in our humble estimation, and the two we’ll introduce you to this month are examples of how your support develops them in ways that make them contributing members of society throughout their entire lives.  In this installment, we are proud to feature Liliana Ledezma.

When you’ve been in the music industry as long as KidWorks volunteer Joe Cristina, recognizing exceptional talent almost becomes instinctual.

When he first met Liliana Ledezma, he knew there was something special about this 18-year-old Mater Dei High School student.

She was one of the very first KidWorks students to enroll in Avanti Music, founded by Joe in 2012 to help our students learn from a professional musician with 37 years of experience in composition, arranging, orchestration and production.

“Lili’s a gifted musician,” Joe says.  “She has what we in the music industry call ‘chops.’  Her proficiency includes the flute, piano, ukulele and vocals.  She’s also been a big part of live performance musical events hosted by KidWorks.”

Joe also sees a deeply considerate and caring person in Lili, who believes strongly in justice and searching for truth.

“Lili does not settle for the easy answer,” Joe says.  “She asks very direct questions in order to get to the underlying truth.”

Another strong trait Joe appreciates in Lili is her encouraging nature.

“Although Lili might be tired from a week of school and work, she is always quick to offer help to another Avanti Music student,” Joe says.  “She’s very accepting of new students.  Lili makes people feel welcome.”

Joe says there is also a lighter side to Lili that’s just as engaging as her musical talent and sense of fairness.

“She’s really funny.” Joe says.  “Her comedic timing is just as finely tuned as her musical talent!”

KBM Visits the Santa Ana Zoo

Our Friday July 29th our KBM kids spend the day at the Santa Ana Zoo! It was such a fun day in the sun learning about all the different types of animals.

Volunteers like Doris made the day great. Doris was one of our UCI committed volunteer, and group leader for the field trip. She did great with her 6 students. We were blessed having her lead a group.

Our Cedar Evergreen youth, Maritza Montiel, volunteered at the KBM field trip. Our very own site director, Brizzy Cruz, was Maritza's program leader two years ago at KCE.
