KidWorks COVID 19 Update - Week #1

First and foremost, thank you for supporting KidWorks. It is reassuring to know we have friends like you walking alongside us.

We continue to serve on the frontlines providing guidance and resources to our families during times of uncertainty.

It's been a whirlwind of activity at KidWorks this past week.  We have transitioned from providing educational and mentoring programs to basic necessities to our students including food and toiletries. Diapers and formula continue to be in huge demand along with food.

Our highest priority is to care for our students physical well-being before transitioning to providing for their mental, emotional and spiritual well-being in the coming weeks. We are not experts in food distribution, thankfully, we've had an outpouring of support from a few generous partners:

  • Second Harvest provided 360 boxes filled with 26 lbs of groceries

  • Love Community Food Bank (next door to KidWorks) donated 4 pallets of produce

  • St. Andrew's provided three pallets of food along with a team of volunteers

  • Community Action Partnership provided poultry and toiletries

Distributing food has allowed our staff to connect with our families, provide reassurance and learn how we can support them during these times of uncertainty. Many have lost their job and fear is their new norm.  Betty, a preschool mom, commented "I don't know what I would do without KidWorks. God bless you today and always."

Meanwhile, Erika, our college coordinator has connected with our 50+ college students.  All have been forced to move out of their dorms and are wrestling whether to come home or couch surf with friends. Many  of our college students are in need of technology equipment including laptops and noise cancelling headphones as they try to adjust to online coursework and continue with their studies.  College Freshman Ruben summarized it best, "It's hard to know how to plan for next year when you aren't sure what's happening next week."

COVID-19 isn't a blip on the radar, it is going to have a lasting impact on the students we serve. There is still much work to be done and KidWorks continues to work quickly to address the needs of those we serve.

Thanks to a few generous friends, every dollar donated will be doubled.  This is an amazing opportunity and you can help us spread the word by forwarding Kidworks e-mails and social media posts.

Thank you walking alongside KidWorks.  We will continue to provide you updates every week amidst the COVID-19 crisis and you can always e-mail me with questions or concerns.

With Gratitude,

David Benavides & the KidWorks Family
